STORY

BEGINNINGS

Since its beginnings in 1993, The Neighbourhood Church, formerly called Southside Community Church, has sensed a call to be in, for, and with the people of the Edmonds neighbourhood. Upon arriving in 1993, Edmonds was a poor and broken neighbourhood full of prostitution, addiction, homelessness, and isolation. Amidst this brokenness, a heart full of love for the neighbourhood began to emerge in members of the church. Since then, The Neighbourhood Church has had a positive impact on the neighbourhood through partnership with community organizations and the municipal government, as well as a multitude of neighbourhood events.

PRESENCE

Over the years, The Neighbourhood Church has partnered with various organizations to bring hope and care to the neighbourhood. These partnerships include hosting The Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby, The Neighbourhood Pantry, Foodbank, The Neighbourhood table, and Emergency Weather Response. Over 1500 neighbours come through the building each week to sustenance food, social services, and a deep sense of community. As The Neighbourhood Church relocates to 7375 Kingsway, these services will continue to run in the interim location, along with new services such as Burnaby Counselling Group, Journey Home, and more.

MIRACLE

We believe God had an even bigger miracle in store for 7135 Walker Avenue.

Shortly after Southside Community Church was planted, an adjacent property became available for purchase. After years of prayer and negotiation, the sellers miraculously dropped the price of the adjacent property, allowing the church to purchase the property. Because of God's blessing of this property and the favour the church has had in the neighbourhood, it is time for The Neighbourhood Church to finally embark on a new redevelopment project.
